Earn Trust. Win Together and Raise the Bar

About MSUM
Foundation

Where grit meets generosity

Every gift, every handshake, every story told and scholarship awarded — it all begins with one goal: supporting students and strengthening our university for the future.

Why We’re Here

The MSUM Foundation was born from the belief that when grit meets generosity, anything is possible.

In 1930, just months after the Alumni Association was formed, a fire destroyed Old Main. Alumni didn’t wait to be asked—they stepped up, purchasing nearby homes to keep classes going. That moment sparked a legacy of care-in-action that still defines who we are today.

Over the decades, that spirit grew. In 1969, a group of visionary leaders gathered at the Rex Café to formally establish the Foundation, driven by the understanding that state support alone wouldn’t be enough to sustain the university’s bold ambitions. What began as the “Founding Fifty” became a growing network of alumni and friends committed to shaping futures.

Every scholarship awarded, building named, or program expanded since has started with someone saying, “I believe in these students. I want to make their journey possible.”

Today, we are still powered by that same belief—that higher education isn’t just a path forward; it’s a promise to one another. A promise built on grit, fueled by generosity, and anchored in the idea that when Dragons rise, we all do.

Our Mission

We create opportunities for alumni, family, and friends to connect, engage, and give to Minnesota State Moorhead.

Our Vision

A thriving university community where every student has the support to elevate their potential into extraordinary impact.

Our Values

At the MSUM Foundation, our work is grounded in three enduring values that reflect the spirit of our university and the region we serve:

Earn Trust

We keep our promises, do what’s right, and honor every donor’s intent. Trust is the foundation of lasting impact.

THE FOUNDATION OF LASTING IMPACT.

Promises Kept · Integrity · Donor Intent · Transparency

Win Together

We back each other, collaborate without silos, and celebrate shared success. Our best work happens as one team.

OUR BEST WORK HAPPENS AS ONE TEAM.

Collaboration · No Silos · Shared Success · Advocacy

Raise the Bar

We stay curious, keep learning, and push for better every day. Good is not enough when students’ futures are on the line.

DRIVEN BY BOLDNESS AND CURIOSITY.

Ambitious Growth · Constant Learning · Innovation · Urgency

Independent by design.
Connected by purpose.

The MSUM Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization—but we are anything but distant. We operate with our own board, structure, and strategy, and most of our staff positions are self-funded. At the same time, we maintain a uniquely close, collaborative relationship with Minnesota State Moorhead.

This push-and-pull partnership is rare in higher education—and it works. While some university foundations are fully separate and others are fully embedded, the MSUM Foundation strikes a purposeful balance: we are autonomous enough to act with agility and donor confidence, yet deeply integrated into the life of the university.
